The Dallas Cowboys have already made their first string of cuts for the 2025 season before their season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4. While Dallas has been a punchline all offseason over the Micah Parsons circus, the Eagles have proven yet again that they are capable of the occasional swing and a miss.
The Eagles have waived offensive lineman Kenyon Green ahead of Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET roster deadline. Just give months ago, Philadelphia sent veteran defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a sixth-round pick to the Texans in exchange for Green and a fifth-round pick.
With questions looming about Philly's secondary depth, you have to think general manager Howie Roseman is kicking himself for even kicking the tires on Green in the first place.
Eagles cutting Kenyon Green was something Cowboys fans saw coming a mile away
As Cowboys fans hate to admit, Roseman has been able to pull off some of the biggest steals in recent memory, like trading for A.J. Brown for pennies. Roseman is widely considered the best GM in the business, which has made him nearly immune to criticism. Like any general manager, Roseman has a number of strikeouts on his resume, but you wouldn't know it.
Trading for Green never made sense, even if the ultimate goal was to offload Gardner-Johnson's contract for cap flexibility.
Green struggled badly as a rookie with the Texas, earning a PFF grade of 37.7 that was dead-last amongst qualified guards. He also committed 12 penalties, which tied for the second-most in the NFL. A shoulder injury cost him the entire 2023 season and his form wasn't much better last season, as evidenced by his 38.6 PFF grade and five allowed sacks.
It's not surprising that the Eagles waved the white flag on Green, but what is surprising is how quickly it happened, especially after using him to trade away a solid secondary piece in Gardner-Johnson.
Cowboys fans will have the last laugh with this, and with the Eagles navigating backup quarterback issues and questions in the secondary, it shows that Philly has a lot more problems on their hand than what is being led on.
That doesn't mean we'll be predicting Dallas to beat them in Week 1, but the reigning Super Bowl champs still have to get their ducks in a row nine days before the opener.
