Eddie Howe has one positive after Newcastle United star Joelinton's worrying injury - opinion

Newcastle United were dealt a major injury blow to midfielder Joelinton during their 3-2 defeat to Liverpool at St James’ Park.

In what was a sensational evening with an electric crowd, Eddie Howe left St James’ Park with much more worry than he could have imagined.

Three Newcastle United players were forced off with injury during the game against Liverpool on Monday night. There are fears that Fabian Schar has a concussion, while midfield maestro Sandro Tonali looks to have suffered a shoulder injury.

Elsewhere, Joelinton left the St James’ Park pitch in tears during the second half after going down and holding his groin. The Brazilian had just been called up to the national squad by Carlo Ancelotti, but he could be forced to pull out if the problem is too severe.

Newcastle are down to the bare bones in midfield, with Joe Willock also not fully fit, so Howe must look at other options. Thankfully, one Newcastle star was able to show that Howe still has enough quality in Joelinton’s absence.

Jacob Ramsey enjoys a promising cameo in Newcastle United defeat

Midfielder Jacob Ramsey joined Newcastle for £43m including add-ons in August, but was made to wait a week to make his debut. The 24-year-old came on in the 76th minute to a thunderous roar from the fans inside the ground.

Ramsey is versatile, so he was situated on the left wing, but was able to move into the middle of the park with ease, and looked a threat throughout his late cameo.

Coming on while a goal down with 10 men is hardly an easy task, but Ramsey attacked the game with grit and integrity, helping the Magpies find an equaliser before Liverpool’s very late winner.

Joelinton being out injured will mean Newcastle lose a brute force in midfield, but he will be replaced by a player with sensational technical ability and eagerness to drive forward with the ball.

Ramsey also worked well with left-back Lewis Hall, another player who did well in his short time on the pitch. The former Aston Villa man now looks set for a run in the starting XI following Joelinton’s injury, so he has the opportunity to prove why Newcastle paid such a high transfer fee.

Aston Villa players’ reaction to Jacob Ramsey joining Newcastle was telling

Ramsey was not registered in time to make his debut for Newcastle in their Premier League opener against Villa, but it was clear he wanted to make up for lost time when he got on the St James’ Park pitch.

Newcastle see Ramsey as a replacement for Sean Longstaff, who joined Leeds United this summer, but he will now have the task of replacing Joelinton for however long he is out for.

As for Tonali, his problem will be assessed on Tuesday to see the extent of the damage, so it is a nervous wait for fans.

When he left, several Villa players wished Ramsey well at Newcastle, with many clearly showing their frustration at a top academy prospect being sold.

The deal had to be done due to Villa’s ongoing PSR concerns, similar to what the Magpies experienced in 2024.
