Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo could leave the club in the last week of the transfer window, it has been reported.

The Athletic claims the United academy graduate would be 'open' to a move if a suitable offer comes in. The Manchester Evening News understands there has been no progress in discussions for a new contract for Mainoo, whose current deal expires in 2027 although the club has the option to extend it by an additional year.

Mainoo has been left on the bench for both of United's Premier League games so far this season, with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro starting against both Arsenal and Fulham, with Manuel Ugarte coming on ahead of the 20-year-old in both games.

Amorim has said that Mainoo's competition in the squad is now with Fernandes - and it will be a tough battle to displace the ever-present United captain.

Following the latest repots, some fans in the Manchester Evening News comments section are saying that perhaps Mainoo should leave the club, if Ruben Amorim is no longer giving him opportunities to develop.

Some fans are concerned that United's proud tradition of rearing excellent footballers in the academy is at risk under Amorim. Reader DAVES says: "Yet another player who has been treated poorly by the club. When you see the likes of Mount & Ugarte starting ahead of you, you must realise something isn't quite right. Then you have Maguire & Heaven being brought on when we are chasing a goal! Madness!"

Commenter Garth123 writes: "The Mainoo situation is a strange one, and is puzzling many of those in the know, including pundits. United, it seems, want him to sign a new contract or contract extension. Okay, that is good, however out of the existing midfield quartet United have on their books, he has had zero minutes playing time.

"The excuse the manager states over Kobbie is that 'he is training well but is competing against Bruno'. That tells me the Kobbie isn't going to play for United in important games as a starter, as Bruno is never dropped and rarely injured."

Yukoncornelius1 says: "It's Kobbie's time. Not Bruno's. Time to be ruthless for future growth. United aren't winning anything this year."

PJB50 writes: "Buy a #6 to play alongside Mainoo for the future, and with thanks, sell Fernandes and let Casemiro go."

Mysticdirk says: "Losing Kobbie Mainoo would be a huge mistake. If, as the manager suggests, Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes are competing for one position, it's Bruno who should go. Kobbie has many more years ahead of him than Bruno and, if the rumours are true, we can cash in now on Bruno."

Herman33 writes: "If Mainoo is sold this window, expect a considerable downturn in the volume of support for Amorim."

Others say a move would be best for both parties. Jungle Jerry says: "Mainoo and his team are probably already working behind the scenes to at least get a loan move to La Liga. That would do him a lot of good and maybe he might find that La Liga is probably where he'll find his place."

BT EXPRESS writes: "I hope Mainoo doesn't leave, but for his sake in his career he has to leave as he is not the manager's favourite like some other so-called good players who know how to butter up the manager..."

Denislawking says: "He won't drop Bruno, so if I were him I'd be off, thank you very much, and go to a club that appreciates his undoubted talent."
