Crystal Palace’s scramble for a centre-back has intensified as Liverpool close in on Marc Guehi, leaving the Eagles braced for a potential captaincy void.
With Guehi’s contract expiring next summer and the Reds readying a bid reportedly in the region of £35 million, Palace have launched approaches for no fewer than three defensive targets in the past week alone.
First, they tabled a £15 million offer for Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji, only to see it rebuffed by Pep Guardiola’s side.
Next, reports emerged that the Eagles are in talks with Toulouse over 19-year-old Jaydee Canvot, whose €20 million valuation would not be problematic for the South London club.
Simultaneously, Fabrizio Romano has linked Palace with a late-surprise approach for Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Marvin Friedrich.
And if it wasn’t enough evidence that Oliver Glasner’s side were desperate for a Marc Guehi replacement, a new link has emerged.
Arsenal insider HandöfArsenal has reported that Crystal Palace tried to sign Jakub Kiwor, but were unable to convince the player of the move:
“Arsenal were packed with offers for Kiwior but the player was set on Porto. Palace made a serious attempt but failed to convince the Polish CB.”
“Arsenal negotiating with Leverkusen to pay lower than the RC for Hincapie. Personal terms are no issue.”
The departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £35 million initially left the Reds with just Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez as the only established senior central defenders heading into the new season.
However, the club moved quickly to secure Giovanni Leoni from Parma last week, with the 19-year-old defender making a £26 million switch.
But Marc Guehi remains a market opportunity to good for the club’s hierarchy to pass on.
