Manchester United have until the deadline on Monday 1st September to complete any incoming or outgoing bits of business
Manchester United have one point on the board from their first two Premier League fixtures from the new season. They lost 1-0 at home to Arsenal in their first game. The Red Devils then drew 1-1 with Fulham last time out at Craven Cottage.
They missed the chance to win against the Whites after Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty. Next up for Ruben Amorim’s side is a Carabao Cup away trip to Grimsby Town on Tuesday night. They then play Burnley at home this weekend.
Manchester United update regarding Kobbie Mainoo
According to The Athletic, United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is ‘open’ to leaving Old Trafford. The transfer window shuts on Monday 1st September at a slightly earlier time than usual at 7pm. The Red Devils have the chance to complete any final bits of incoming or outgoing business.
Mainoo, 20, has been on the books of his current club for his whole career to date. He rose up through the academy ranks and was a regular at various different youth levels. The England international, who has 10 caps to his name, signed his first professional contract back in 2022.
The Cheadle Hulme-born man then made his first-team debut in January 2023 in a Carabao Cup clash against Charlton Athletic. He has since gone on to make 72 appearances in all competitions, 37 of which came in the last campaign, and he scored two goals. However, his long-term future is up in the air after falling down the pecking order under Amorim. He has not started either game of the current campaign.
What now for Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United?
United have a big decision to make on what to do next with Mainoo. If a big money offer came in from elsewhere, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him leave. Letting him go would help free up space and funds in their ranks to pave the way for potential new faces.
However, he is still young and has bags of potential meaning they may regret cashing in on him if he goes somewhere and becomes an instant hit. The youngster needs to find a place he is guaranteed regular minutes and the Red Devils can’t give him that right now. Chelsea were linked with him in March, as per a report by CaughtOffside.
Mainoo is still highly-rated in the game. Posting on Instagram after the FA Cup final in 2024, Paul Scholes sent this message: "Read a few comparisons between me and this kid last week... don't waste your time, he is 10 times the player I was at 19. Just love the way he receives the ball, the calmness, the awareness of what's around him and of course big goals in big games. This boy is special.”
Meanwhile, his ex-teammate Marcus Rashford was also full of praise for him and said: “I think he’s a really relaxed player, he’s composed and confident in his abilities. I think it’s vital, to be a midfielder for United you have to want the ball all the time and you have to be able to have the skillset and the abilities that he has in order to play in the highest level of games. To be honest, that’s not the bits that surprise me about him, it’s just his general aura.”
