Denmark Under-21s head coach Lars Knudsen has highlighted the importance of Manchester United striker Chido Obi playing regular football this season.

The United youngster, 17, has been left out of the matchday squad for each of the Reds' opening two Premier League matches this season despite fellow countryman and striker Rasmus Hojlund also being omitted from Ruben Amorim's plans.

Obi arrived at Old Trafford from Arsenal almost a year ago and was fast-tracked to the first-team squad last term, ending the campaign with eight appearances to his name. He also went on the post-season tour and scored twice in the 3-1 win over Hong Kong.

Considered as one of the most exciting prospects emerging from United's academy, everyone has high hopes that Obi will be able to forge a long and successful career for himself at Old Trafford.

And those who are connected to the Danish national team are also hoping he will follow in the same vein at international level, meaning Knudsen is keen for the striker to play as much as possible this season.

"I can't stand here and say anything about that, because it's somewhere else than with me," Knudsen said, as quoted by Bold.

"It's just a hope we have for the national teams, because we know that playing time is crucial.

"This is both for performance, but also for these young people in terms of developing themselves. Of course, we hope that he will get somewhere where he can play."

Obi, who was given his debut for Denmark's Under-21s in March, has featured in both of United's Under-21s opening two Premier League 2 games this season, scoring in the 4-2 win over Norwich City.
