Essex-born school-boy Max Dowman makes premier league debut aged 15

Max Dowman from Chelmsford became the second youngest player in history to appear in the league, aged 15 years and 234 days as he made a remarkable cameo in The Gunners 5-0 hammering at home to Leeds on Saturday.

He comes in second only to his Arsenal teammate Ethan Nwaneri, who holds the record being just 15 years and 181 days old when he made his first appearance in the league.

Born in 2009, he joined the Arsenal youth academy in 2015, following time at the youth set-up at Billericay Town.

He went on to be involved in the Arsenal under-18 set up at the age of 13 before being heavily praised for his pre-season performances ahead of the start of the current campaign.

The young star came on in the 64th minute for Noni Madueke and certainly lived up to the hype.

With an obvious confidence in possession he showed his class and gave Leeds full-back Gabriel Gudmundsson a torrid time getting passed his man on a couple of occasions.

He went on to have a big involvement in the game and was fouled for the penalty with some great footwork which was subsequently tucked away by Viktor Gyokeres in the 95th minute to complete their 5-0 thumping.

He has since been heavily praised by premier league legend, Wayne Rooney who burst onto the scene aged just 16 back in 2002, before having a stellar career scoring 208 premier league goals.

Speaking on his BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show he said: “To play at that age in the Premier League is crazy.

“I know I played when I was young, but I think he’s like 150 days younger than I was, or more.

“For Max and his family and friends, I’m sure they’re all living in a dream and a fairy-tale and it probably hasn’t hit home yet.

"But you can see his future is so bright, he is going to have a massive future.

“Everyone you speak to in football, the same name keeps coming back - Max Dowman.”
