NY Giants Make Tough Call on Fan Favorite Quarterback

An era for a New York Giants backup quarterback has come to an end. On Tuesday morning, the team reportedly released the 27-year-old New Jersey-born passer, Tommy DeVito.

For the first time in his career, DeVito could hit the free agency market after playing for his first NFL team. First, he'll have to clear waivers before getting an opportunity to choose his next destination.

via @AdamSchefter: With Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston on the roster, the Giants were unwilling to carry four quarterbacks. Tommy DeVito now will go on waivers.

During DeVito's time with the Giants, he earned the status of being a fan favorite. He spent the past two seasons playing in New York for the Big Blue.

DeVito had runs with two teams during his college stint. He started his NCAA stint at Syracuse for his first three seasons after redshirting in 2017.

Ahead of the 2022 NCAA season, DeVito switched to Illinois. In his final season, DeVito achieved an 8-5 starting record, posting 2,650 yards, 15 touchdowns, and four interceptions. He left the NCAA with over 6,500 passing yards, 43 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.

Although DeVito entered the 2023 NFL Draft, he went without getting a call. As an undrafted prospect, DeVito signed with the Giants. He spent some time with the practice squad, but was called up during the season. DeVitor was one of the many backups to former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.

Over the past two seasons, DeVito appeared in 12 games for the Giants. He saw the field nine times in 2023, even picking up six starts. As a starter, DeVito went 3-3. During his rookie year, he completed 64 percent of his 178 passes for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also had a rushing touchdown.

Last season, DeVito saw the field three times. He started two of those games. The Giants went 0-2 during that stretch. DeVito would throw for 257 yards without a touchdown.

It's unclear what's next for DeVito. As for the Giants, they are set to carry three quarterbacks this year. Russell Wilson was crowned the starter heading into training camp. Meanwhile, Jameis Winston and the rookie Jaxson Dart have been battling for the second-string spot throughout the preseason.
