Just in: David Ornstein says Chelsea make contact to sign 'spectacular' Barcelona star

Chelsea have made contact with the representatives of Barcelona's Fermin Lopez, and are considering making a move to secure his signature, according to David Ornstein.

It's been a busy summer transfer window for the Blues so far, bringing in a host of new players while also offloading many stars. Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Jorrel Hato, and Liam Delap are among the senior players to have arrived through the door, while we've also seen the likes of Noni Madueke, Joao Felix, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and, more recently, Carney Chukwuemeka depart.

Enzo Maresca's side don't appear to be finished with their business, especially as they attempt to compete for the Premier League title alongside the Champions League. Chelsea looked impressive last time out against West Ham United, winning 5-1 away from home, but they are in the hunt for further reinforcements over the coming days before the window closes.

Fermin Lopez for Barcelona

Reporting for The Athletic, Ornstein has confirmed that Chelsea are evaluating whether to make a move to sign Barcelona's Lopez. The Premier League outfit have been in touch with the players' representatives, but they are yet to reach out to Barcelona to assess whether they'd be willing to sell.

Lopez, described as 'spectacular' by Breaking The Lines, would provide Chelsea with another versatile midfield option. The Spanish star has a £437m release clause in his contract, but it's a requirement for all La Liga clubs to have this kind of clause written into their deals.

Lopez has predominantly played in a central role during his time at Barcelona, and he's looked a real threat in the final third when deployed in an attacking midfield position. The 22-year-old can also play on the left-hand side of attack, so his versatility could make him a useful option for Maresca.
