The 2025 FIBA AmeriCup clash between Argentina and the Dominican Republic ended in a violent brawl. FIBA handed down suspensions and fines, including a penalty for Argentina coach Pablo Prigioni, also an NBA assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The image of Gonzalo Bressan leaving the court bloodied after the clash between Argentina and the Dominican Republic at the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup has overshadowed the basketball itself.
Tensions that had built during the game erupted after the final buzzer, with players from both sides engaging in shoves, grappling, and punches at midcourt. The flashpoint came between David Jones and Bressan, whose exchange of blows triggered the melee and forced FIBA to intervene with disciplinary measures.
In an official statement, FIBA announced a series of sanctions.
Both Jones and Bressan received two-game suspensions in international competition. Argentina’s FranciscoCaffaro andJuanpi Vaulet were each banned for one game, while head coach Pablo Prigioni, an assistant coach at the Minnesota Timberwolves, was fined 2,000 Swiss francs (approx. $2,485).
The Argentine Basketball Federation was handed a 20,000 Swiss franc penalty, with half of it suspended on probation for three years. The Dominican federation received an identical punishment.
Further suspensions hit the Dominican squad as well: Juan Guerrero and Juan Suero were banned for one game, while Angel Delgado was suspended for one game with a three-year probationary period. A repeat offense would trigger an automatic additional suspension on top of new sanctions.
FIBA made clear that no further comment would follow, closing a case that cast a shadow over the tournament in Managua.
