Alan Shearer names Leeds United advantage in Premier League survival bid - 'Crazy'

Alan Shearer reckons Leeds United already possess a crucial asset that could help them avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

Daniel Farke's first two outings back in the top-flight have gone largely as expected. An electric Elland Road crowd inspired Leeds to a 1-0 opening-day win over Everton, before a heavy 5-0 defeat at Arsenal served as a reminder of the gulf in quality between the newly-promoted side and one of the title favourites.

Despite that setback, Leeds sit above the likes of Manchester United, Newcastle and Aston Villa after two rounds of fixtures. Farke will have been disappointed to see his men concede five at the Emirates but, with Arsenal having spent close to £300m this summer, the result shouldn't be too damaging for the team.

Shearer, the Premier League's all-time top-scorer, insists Leeds shouldn't dwell on the Arsenal defeat. Instead, he highlighted the importance of Elland Road as a fortress in their survival bid.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer said: "It's no surprise that all three of them have won at home - Leeds, Sunderland and Burnley.

"That's going to be key isn't it, particularly at Sunderland and Elland Road because of how crazy their fans are. That will be key to them - how they get on in their home games.

"Leeds are not going to be judged away to Arsenal. They have to pick up points at home - and get the odd draw away from home - and that's how one of them can stay up."

The numbers back up Shearer's claim. Leeds lost just once at home in the Championship last season, a narrow 1-0 defeat to Burnley, and have yet to lose at Elland Road in 2025.

Their next league test in front of their home fans comes on Saturday against a struggling Newcastle side. Before that, Farke's men face Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Cup tonight in what promises to be a fiery Yorkshire derby (8pm).
