When will third round ties be played?

In line with last year’s competition, this season’s Carabao Cup third round ties will be played across two weeks, due to European competition matches being played in the weeks beginning 15th and 22nd September.

Fixtures in the Europa League take place on the week beginning 22nd September, therefore meaning that Forest's third round tie is set to be played in the week beginning 15th September.

How does the third round draw work?

The Carabao Cup third round draw consists of 32 teams – 23 winners from the second round along with the nine Premier League sides competing in UEFA competitions.

For the main draw, two separate bowls will be utilised – one consisting of the eight clubs competing in the Champions League and Europa League, and one consisting of the remaining 24 clubs.

As the balls will be split across two pots, a pre-draw will be required first to determine whether each of the eight Champions League/Europa League teams will be playing home or away.

This pre-draw will be shown live on Sky Sports during the build-up to Grimsby Town’s match against Manchester United.

For the main draw, the first eight ties will be drawn by alternating between one club from Bowl 1 and one club from Bowl 2, with the home and away positioning of the Champions League/Europa League teams already pre-determined in the earlier draw.

Once the first eight ties featuring the Champions League and Europa League teams have been drawn, the remaining eight ties will then be drawn from Bowl 2 only.

From this round of the competition, the draw is no longer regionalised into northern and southern sections.
