Kobbie Mainoo’s dream of making it big at Manchester United is fading at the moment. It might be time for the youngster to take charge of his own career.
He was a spectator on the bench in the draw with Fulham. It is clear that Mainoo has dropped down the pecking order of Ruben Amorim. Bruno Fernandes is now playing deeper and Manuel Ugarte is also being given time ahead of him.
In 2023, he made 37 appearances, yet he has already made much less impact this season. That puts serious doubt into his future. Reports have indicated there has been no advancement in contract discussions. He has only two years remaining on the existing deal. That said, the midfielder is at an important stage of his career.
A risk to his World Cup hopes
Mainoo’s bigger worry is not just club football, but his international future. With the 2026 World Cup in sight, he cannot afford another season of warming the bench. That talent will go to waste if he doesn’t step out of Old Trafford’s shadow.
Sources claim he wanted to prove himself in pre-season. But, his lack of opportunities shows the head coach Amorim isn’t fully convinced with the player’s work. The only real solution for the youngster is to make a move. He needs to find a place where he can play regular football week in, week out.
