EuroBasket 2025 tips off on Wednesday as 24 teams that include several current and former Celtics players take part in the tournament to be crowned the champions of Europe. Spain will be looking to repeat as champions after taking down France in 2022. Plenty of big NBA names will take part in the action like Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic. French star Victor Wembanyama is sidelined as he recovers from a blood clot but the competition will be fierce across a deep field overall.
The group stage will start this week and feature round-robin style play with head-to-head matchups between every team in the group. There are six teams in each group and the top four teams in each group will advance out of the group stage to the knockout stage, which is a single-elimination tournament featuring the top 16 teams.
Neemias Queta is the only current member of the Celtics taking part in the tournament as he stars for Portugal while prepping for a potentially far bigger role for him in Boston this season. Queta looked strong in some exhibition tuneups despite dealing with a leg injury but it will be a tough battle for him to advance out of the group stage as Portugal faces a lot of talent in Group A. The EuroBasket tournament will run through Sept. 14 with games played in four host countries: Cyprus, Finland, Latvia and Poland. The event will conclude with the semifinals and finals in Latvia, giving a potential opportunity for former Celtic big man Kristaps Porzingis to win the tournament in front of his hometown crowd.
