Real Madrid’s 3–0 victory over Real Oviedo on the weekend was marred by yet another shameful episode of racist abuse in Spanish football. Both Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé were subjected to discriminatory chants at the Carlos Tartiere stadium, overshadowing what should have been a celebratory night for Los Blancos.
The Brazilian forward was already a target of jeers after being booked for simulation, with Oviedo fans chanting “tonto” (“idiot”) at him and mocking him with beach balls referencing his Ballon d’Or snub. But the abuse escalated further.
In footage released by Movistar+, monkey chants were clearly heard twice: after Mbappé’s opening goal in the 37th minute, and again in the 63rd minute when Vinícius came on for Rodrygo. Cameras even caught Vinícius and Mbappé celebrating Madrid’s third goal while the racist chants rang out.
Shortly after the chants, Real Oviedo announced over the stadium loudspeaker that the anti-racism protocol had been triggered. It remains unclear whether the referee formally included the incident in his match report.
Club president Martín Peláez later condemned the behaviour
> “This institution condemns any act of racism, sexism, or discrimination of any kind. We are working with security personnel and the police to investigate what happened, and if there is the slightest evidence that this occurred, those responsible will be punished because we cannot tolerate this.
> “It doesn’t deserve to be tarnished by an isolated incident. We can’t lose everything that is wonderful about these fans and this stadium. If it happened, which hasn’t been confirmed, the perpetrator will be punished with the full force of the club and the law.”
As is customary, La Liga sent its weekly complaint to the RFEF Competition Committee and Spain’s Anti-Violence Commission regarding offensive chants across matches. Included were insults directed at Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and chants against Real Madrid, but the racist abuse captured on Movistar+ was notably absent.
El Día Después, the Movistar+ program that revealed the monkey chants, reported that La Liga has since requested the images in order to prepare a follow-up report and add them to its official complaint.
Sadly, this is not an isolated case. Vinícius has been racially abused on multiple occasions over the past several years, including earlier this season against Real Sociedad. In May, four individuals involved in hanging an effigy of Vinícius from a Madrid bridge were handed prison sentences.
La Liga’s report also noted several incidents from the Oviedo supporters’ section, which chanted against Prime Minister Sánchez before kickoff, insulted Real Madrid in the 39th minute, sang derogatory chants in the 74th, and shouted “tonto” at Vinícius in the 79th minute.
