Arsenal have been offered a glimmer of hope over Martin Odegaard’s fitness after the midfielder was included in Norway’s squad for the upcoming international break.

The Gunners were dealt a scare during their 5-0 win over Leeds United at the weekend when their captain was forced off with a shoulder issue. Odegaard went down following a challenge and was unable to shake off the problem, prompting Mikel Arteta to substitute him in the 38th minute for teenager Ethan Nwaneri.

Speaking after the match, Arteta admitted he was uncertain about the extent of the injury and confirmed that Odegaard would need further tests. “So Martin felt something in his shoulder when he landed,” Arteta explained. “We don’t know [how bad it is]. We’ll have to scan him tomorrow and understand a bit better.”

With Arsenal preparing for a crucial top-of-the-table clash against Liverpool on Sunday, Odegaard’s availability remains a major concern. However, his inclusion in Norway’s September fixtures suggests optimism. The 25-year-old has been named in Ståle Solbakken’s squad for a friendly against Finland on September 4 and a World Cup qualifier at home to Moldova on September 9.

As Norway’s captain and talisman, Odegaard’s selection reflects his importance to the national side, though it does not guarantee he has fully recovered from the knock.

His injury scare was not Arsenal’s only setback against Leeds. Bukayo Saka was also forced off, raising fears of another hamstring issue. The England winger previously underwent surgery on a similar problem earlier this year and could now face another spell on the sidelines.

Arsenal will hope both players recover swiftly, but Arteta does have cover within his squad. New signing Noni Madueke can deputise on the right wing in Saka’s absence, while £67.5 million recruit Eberechi Eze could step into Odegaard’s No. 10 role if required.
