What the Spanish media are reporting about Chelsea's interest in Fermin Lopez

Barcelona star Fermin Lopez has been linked as a potential Chelsea target this summer, and his name has now resurfaced during the final week of the window.

Fermin Lopez, 22, is a talented attacking midfielder developed in the Barcelona academy. He’s since made 89 first-team appearances for the La Liga giants, too.

It was reported back in June that Barcelona would be prepared to sell Lopez this summer if he directly asks to leave the Camp Nou. However, the Spain international is still part of Hansi Flick’s group, starting in their first league match of the season as well.

Reports earlier this month claimed that Chelsea were lining up a bid for Lopez, and it looks like the time has now come.

The rumours of Fermin Lopez to Chelsea reignited on Tuesday

According to The Athletic, Chelsea have been in contact with Lopez’s camp as they plot a potential move for the Barcelona man.

Reports in the Spanish media say that the Blues’ interest has intensified further, though.

Spanish newspaper Sport claims that Chelsea have now submitted an offer worth around €50m (£43m) to sign Barcelona’s Lopez this summer. Apparently, the La Liga giants need a significant sale to help with Financial Fair Play, so they are now evaluating the bid from Enzo Maresca’s side.

The Blues have been heavily linked recently with moves for RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons and Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho to reinforce their attacking options even further. However, Chelsea have been waiting to sell more players before launching their moves.

It will be interesting to see if the Lopez interest has any impact on Simons or Garnacho because they play in the final third of the pitch.

Chelsea officially sold Carney Chukwuemeka to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, so hopefully that can speed things up for some late incomings.

Fermin Lopez could be great value for money

If Barcelona sold Lopez for under £50m, they could definitely regret it further down the line.

The technical attacker, who’s got two Spain caps, is a very talented footballer. He’s certainly made a positive impact in the Barcelona first team recently.

Fermin Lopez’s record in the Barcelona first team

If you look at Everton securing a £42m deal (Sky Sports) to sign Tyler Dibling from Southampton this summer, it makes Barcelona’s Lopez look like a snip for nearly the same price.

We would argue that Chelsea’s priority should be on a new goalkeeper or central defender, but the focus to continue making improvements in attack is quite evident.
