New Orleans Saints Make Surprising QB Move

The New Orleans Saints may very well have the worst quarterback room in football heading into 2025. Or, at the very least, the one with the most questions.

Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough are battling it out for the Saints' starting quarterback job, and the prevailing thought has been that Jake Haener would be on the roster, too. After all, you wouldn't think a team in New Orleans' situation would only keep two signal-callers, right?

Well, apparently, that is exactly what the Saints are doing, as Mike Garafolo of NFL Network has reported that New Orleans has released Haener.

The Saints selected Haener in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He didn't play at all during his rookie campaign, but last year, he made eight appearances and one start, going 18-for-39 with 226 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Obviously, the 26-year-old was not all that impressive in limited action, but the fact that New Orleans seems to be on its way to retaining just two active quarterbacks on its 53-man roster is peculiar.

Of course, the Saints could always sign another quarterback elsewhere. Perhaps they simply just do not like what Haener brings to the table and would prefer to bring in a different backup. Or, maybe New Orleans wants to keep that spot open somewhere else on the roster.

The Saints have still not named a starting quarterback, although the general consensus is that it will be Rattler, who started six games for New Orleans last season and totaled 1,317 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 57 percent of his passes.

The Saints selected Shough in the second round of the draft back in April. Many felt New Orleans overdrafted the Louisville product, who also turns 26 years old in September. We'll see what the Saints decide to do under center in the coming days.
