Premier League Player of the Week: Jack Grealish shines in Everton's first game at new stadium

Following a stellar showing in his home debut for Everton, Jack Grealish is VAVEL's Premier League Player of the Week.

The England international provided assists for both goals as the Toffees overcame Brighton in their first game at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

It was also Everton's first win of the campaign after a disappointing loss against Leeds United on the opening gameweek, where Grealish was only a substitute.

Playing from his favoured left-hand side, the 29-year-old looked rejuvenated and motivated against Brighton, a feature in his game that was absent during last season for his parent club, Manchester City.

Clearly looking to prove something to Pep Guardiola, Grealish has started strongly under David Moyes on Merseyside.

Grealish a livewire for Everton

Jack Grealish's move to the Toffees was always seen as a massive coup for the team receiving him. Everton are surely going to get an improved product than the one that has been irregularly appearing for Manchester City.

This performance was a reminder of what the Birmingham-born midfielder was all about. His dribbling and high activity in the game were reminiscent of his Aston Villa days.

He was regularly involved in duels with Mats Wieffer, who occupied the right-back position for Brighton & Hove Albion in this game. Grealish was constantly a nuisance down the left, regularly attempting take-ons against the Dutch midfielder who was out of position.

Perhaps the greatest strength of Grealish is his strength rather than his dribbling. His ability to match the physicality of defenders is the reason his ball retention is so strong, which also can help Everton's number 18 draw fouls as he frustrates the opposition.

This never left the game of the winger while he was at Manchester City. He was simply bogged down by agile touchline huggers who Guardiola preferred over Grealish, who has never seemed to be a tactical fit for the Catalan genius.

At Everton, his freedom has returned, and now variation and confidence are in Grealish's game, as accentuated in his two assists on Sunday.

The first, which must be mentioned as the first goal at Everton's new ground, was vintage Jack Grealish.

Gliding down the left, the 29-year-old skipped past Wieffer with a trademark right-footed touch onto his left foot, opening up a cross to the back post for Illiman Ndiaye, who arrived to tap home.

After drawing a yellow card on Wieffer at the end of the first half, Grealish was granted greater space to create in the second half.

Shortly after the interval, the second assist arrived. It would be untrue to paint this one as anything more than a simple pass, but it counts in the record books as he laid it off to James Garner, who fired home from outside the box.

Grealish continued to be a thorn in Brighton's side, as he wriggled and dribbled at the centre of Everton's attacking phases, keeping the ball close and distributing well to his teammates. He could have had a third assist late on when squaring to Dwight McNeil, but the English winger fluffed his shot.

The Stats

Perhaps an 83% passing accuracy from 35 passes (29 successful) reads poorly for Grealish, but as a creator, he was often seeking more ambitious passes for his teammates.

However, 19 successful final-third passes read that most of his involvements were key in Everton's attacking moments in the game. Adding five dribbles to that, matching the number of Ndiaye on the right, it shows he is causing problems for the opposition defence.

Opta stats show Grealish was often cutting the ball back for his teammates after completing dribbles, and usually had an inverting run from a teammate to provide a pass to.

A Brucey bonus to Grealish's game came in the form of tackling success throughout the game. A 100% (3/3) success rate shows that the work rate that David Moyes demands is also in his game.

With it being a World Cup year, Grealish will be desperate to return to the England squad. It will not be easy due to increased competition, but these performances will only help in catching Thomas Tuchel's eye, who will be keen to bring experience to the Three Lions squad that heads to the USA.

Nonetheless, this Everton move was perfect for the 29-year-old, who is able to showcase his raw ability and help the Toffees climb the Premier League table.
