A former Penn State star might be looking for a new NFL team.
Wide receiver KJ Hamler is being released by the Buffalo Bills. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news on Tuesday’s roster cutdown day.
Hamler, entering his sixth NFL season, had a solid preseason and was a star of the HBO series “Hard Knocks.” If he clears waivers, there’s a chance the Bills sign him to their practice squad.
Hamler was a standout for the Nittany Lions, recording 98 catches for 1,658 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2018 and 2019. He was an All-Big Ten honoree in 2019.
Hamler’s explosiveness and upside got him drafted No. 46 overall in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. The Michigan native had a promising rookie season with 30 catches for 381 yards and three touchdowns.
But several medical issues piled up for Hamler. First, a torn ACL ended his 2021 season. In December 2022, he was placed on IR with a hamstring injury. In March 2023, he suffered a torn pectoral muscle. And in July 2023, he was diagnosed with pericarditis, a heart condition.
Hamler signed briefly with the Indianapolis Colts in 2023 then the Bills in 2024.
