Fantasy Premier League: winners and losers from FPL gameweek 2

Gameweek 2 of Fantasy Premier League 2025/26 has come to a close, as Liverpool snatched a last-gasp winner over Newcastle United last night.

Once again, a few unfamiliar faces have worked their way into the FPL team of the week – alongside a smattering of usual suspects. Things are quite different to the Fantasy Premier League – best performers and biggest flops after GW1.

With two gameweeks now in the books, how is your squad coming along? If you need some recommendations, we might be able to help you out.

Goalkeepers

By far, Everton star Jordan Pickford was the number one goalkeeper in gameweek 2. A clean sheet and a penalty save gave the Blues’ shot stopper a healthy total of 15 points.

On the other end of the spectrum, Manchester City’s James Trafford had a nightmare. He was selected over Ederson once again and failed to justify his inclusion, as he cost the Citizens a vital goal and made just three saves all afternoon.

Furthermore, Alisson owners will also feel let down after the Brazilian let in two goals for the second week in a row for Liverpool. At £5.5, there are certainly better options out there this season – even if Alisson is arguably the world’s greatest goalkeeper.

Defenders

The highest scoring player at the weekend was, once again, a defender. Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber netted a whopping 24 points this week as the Gunners smashed Leeds United and picked up a clean sheet. The Dutchman scored two of the Arsenal goals that evening, assisting another and collecting the maximum bonus points for good measure.

Additionally, Riccardo Calafiori and Bournemouth’s Bafode Diakite were among the top scorers of the weekend, picking up 13 and 10 points respectively.

Could this be a sign that the FPL meta is shifting towards defenders? The defensive contributions points system has certainly made a difference – with so many misfiring strikers in the Premier League, your budget could be put to better use on your backline.

Despite this, it was another poor outing for Liverpool’s expensive defenders. Particularly, the error-strewn display of Ibrahima Konate drew criticism – it marks another week where the defending champions have failed to keep a clean sheet.
