Man United broke£60m British record 11 years ago, Ineos have used it as a lesson

Ineos have had to look at Manchester United’s mistakes over the past decade to know what to avoid moving forward.

Unfortunately, there have been countless mistakes made by Manchester United since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. Now, it’s down to Ineos and Ruben Amorim to get the club back on track.

The aim is to win the Premier League by 2028, but in order to achieve that, there is so much work to be done both on and off the pitch.

In particular, United’s recruitment has been terrible, but there has been a noticeable change in transfer strategy under Ineos.

Ineos have recruited well at United so far, but it’s hard to judge so early into their era of ownership. They have, however, at least learned some crucial lessons from the past.

Man United broke £60m transfer record for Angel Di Maria

The recruitment post-Ferguson has been so poor that United’s flop XI is made up of several big-money signings.

It includes some of United’s most expensive transfers of all time. The £59.7 million signing of Angel Di Maria recently dropped down to 11th in that list, but it is still remembered as a complete and utter failure at Old Trafford.

It has been exactly 11 years since Di Maria left Real Madrid to join Louis van Gaal’s United. It was a move that sent ripples through the footballing world and broke the British transfer record.

After leaving, it has been made clear that Di Maria “hates” Manchester United and was desperate to leave the club just one year after joining.

The Argentine scored four goals and registered 11 assists in 32 appearances for United, before leaving to join PSG in a £44 million deal after one season in England.

Man United learned from Angel Di Maria failure

Di Maria wasn’t United’s first big-money flop and he certainly hasn’t been the last, but Ineos are putting extra effort into recruitment to try and fix the terrible record at Old Trafford.

Amorim revealed United have made a new transfer “rule” now used for every new signing.

He explained that United are going through extra steps to assess the character of each player before they are brought to Old Trafford.

Many players have arrived and failed to deal with the immense pressure and stature that comes with representing United, and Ineos are keen to fix that.

Amorim and United’s recruitment team have been eager to speak to a player’s close network before completing a deal so they have a strong idea of who and what they are signing.

Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have impressed since arriving in Manchester, and Amorim was confident that both players would add character and leadership to his dressing room.
