Ex-Michigan standout, Detroit native, waived by Vikings

Former Michigan football standout Ambry Thomas, who last appeared in an NFL game in 2023, was waived by the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday.

Rosters across the league must be trimmed to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Thomas.

Thomas was drafted in the third round, 101st overall, by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021. The cornerback played three seasons there, starting 11 games and tallying 79 tackles and two interceptions.

He was part of Minnesota’s practice squad last year and was vying for a roster spot this season. He intercepted a pass in the Vikings’ first preseason game on Aug. 9.

Thomas played at Martin Luther King High School in Detroit before enrolling at Michigan in 2017. He played mostly on special teams that season, including as a kick returner. He played special teams and defense as a sophomore. In the season opener at Notre Dame, he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown.

He broke through as a junior in 2019, earning third-team All-Big Ten honors for his play at corner. He started all 13 games on defense and finished with three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and 38 tackles. He was named Michigan’s defensive skill player of the year.

Thomas opted out of the COVID-shortened 2020 season and entered the 2021 draft. His rookie year included a game-sealing interception of the Rams’ Matthew Stafford in overtime of the last game of the regular season, sending the 49ers to the playoffs.

Thomas was released by San Francisco on Dec. 17, 2024 and claimed by the Indianapolis Colts the next day. However, he was released after failing his physical.
