New Carabao Cup rule change that could impact Leeds United

Leeds United are in cup action for the first time this season as they aim to make it to the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The Whites have a short journey to take on Championship side Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough tonight (Tuesday, 8pm kick-off). The game comes amid the backdrop of fan protests around the home team.

A win would see Leeds book their place in the third round draw which take place on Wednesday night.

After falling out of the competition at the first round last season, Daniel Farke's side will be aiming to bounce back from the weekend's 5-0 Premier League defeat against Arsenal and progress as far as possible. However, like last year, there will be some alterations to the third round draw id Leeds get there

Here's everything you need to know.

When is the draw?

The Carabao Cup third round draw is scheduled for Wednesday, 27 August, 2025, following the conclusion of the second round match between Grimsby Town and Manchester United. The draw will be broadcast live on Sky Sports around 10pm.

Draw rule changes.

Similar to last year, there will be some modifications to the third round draw due to the expansion of the European competitions. The schedule dictates that teams competing in Europe (excluding Crystal Palace in the UEFA Conference League) will not face each other in the third round.

The draw will be conducted using two separate bowls, one containing the eight European teams and the other holding the remaining 24 clubs. A pre-draw will determine whether the European teams will play at home or away.

The pre-draw will take place on Sky Sports prior to the match between Grimsby and Man United. The main draw will then take place after full-time of that game.

The first eight matches will feature one of the European teams drawn against a team from the other bowl. The remaining eight fixtures will solely involve teams from the second bowl.

So when are the third round games scheduled?

The Carabao Cup third round matches will be spread over two weeks, with the initial set kicking off in the week commencing 15 September and the subsequent batch starting the week of 22 September.

Will there be extra time in the third round?

No, consistent with previous rounds of the Carabao Cup, if the scores are tied after 90 minutes, the third round ties will proceed directly to penalties without any extra time.

Also, note that VAR will not be in use during the third round of the Carabao Cup.
