Ending the transfer window as they started it, Liverpool are now reportedly willing to meet the asking price to sign a superstar forward after meeting with his agent.
Slot: Liverpool "lucky" against Newcastle
Last weekend, it was Federico Chiesa out from the cold to claw a point away from Bournemouth and all three into Liverpool's hands. It was the most dramatic way possible for the Reds to open their Premier League title defence, but anyone hoping for a more composed affair one week later was always destined for disappointment with St James' Park awaiting.
This time, the stage was not set for Chiesa, it was not set for Mohamed Salah and it was certainly not set for Alexander Isak, as many believed it could be amid the ongoing saga of the summer.
Instead, up stepped 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha to steal the headlines and to create the ultimate history. Just one week on from receiving his GCSE results, the winger passed the school of finishing with flying colours by side-footing home as if he was a Premier League veteran rather than a teenage debutant.
It's a moment that has already been etched into the Liverpool history books and, much to the joy of those around Merseyside, taken Michael Owen off his perch as the Reds' youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer. But although he's been one of many to praise Ngumoha, Arne Slot also admitted that Liverpool were "lucky" to escape with three points late on for the second week running.
Away from the drama, the reality is that Liverpool have lost a 2-0 lead two weeks on the bounce and have major problems to solve before Arsenal's visit next weekend. Whether the transfer window offers Slot one final solution on that front remains to be seen, however.
Liverpool willing to meet Rodrygo asking price
According to Sky Sports journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Liverpool are now willing to meet Rodrygo's asking price after meeting with super agent Kia Joorabchian, who convinced them that the Brazilian could be an alternative to Isak this month.
The Real Madrid winger has looked likely to leave the Spanish giants all summer, but is yet to see any club match his reported €100m (£86m) asking price. Now, though, with less than a week remaining until the window slams shut, Liverpool could do exactly that.
Although Ngumoha stole the headlines against Newcastle to flip the narrative, there's no denying the alarm bells that should be ringing for Liverpool after being left to turn to a 16-year-old debutant to change the game.

For all their good business this summer, the Reds still need at least one more forward and a blockbuster name like Rodrygo could seriously solidify their title defence.
