Former Lions WR out in Houston after strong preseason finale back in Detroit

ALLEN PARK -- Quintez Cephus is being waived by the Houston Texans after turning in a solid preseason finale back in Detroit.

Cephus, who was a 2020 fifth-round pick by the Lions, caught four passes for 51 yards and one impressive touchdown against the Lions. He also dropped one of the seven targets sent his way, which resulted in an interception by cornerback Tyson Russell.

The 27-year-old wide receiver has not appeared in a regular-season since 2022 while still with the team that drafted him. He has 37 career catches for 568 yards and four touchdowns, all coming with the Lions from 2020 to 2022.

Cephus has been trying to work his way back onto a 53-man roster after serving a year-long suspension for violating the league’s gambling policy in April 2023.

He was released by the Lions at the time of his suspension, and has since had stints with the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and two stints in Houston.

For the most part, just really thankful to just be given an opportunity. It’s been a good, long journey for me and any time I get an opportunity, I’m just overly grateful for that,“ Cephus said after the preseason finale last weekend in Detroit. ”Just being here, getting to perform on this stage, it means a lot, not just for me, but for my family back home.

“We all just want an opportunity and to be able to be here and make the most of that opportunity, I left a couple plays out there for sure, but I’ll get those back, hopefully. For the most part, just overly grateful to be here and have an opportunity, especially in Detroit.”
