Carabao Cup third-round draw has special conditions for Newcastle

The EFL has announced the Carabao Cup Third Round will have changes to the draw ahead of Newcastle's entry to defend their crown.

The Carabao Cup third-round draw will have special conditions again because of the expanded European competition calendar for the 2024/25 season.

As a Premier League club taking part in European competition, Newcastle enter the league cup in the Third Round, which will include 32 clubs.

The draw will take place live on Sky Sports on Wednesday, August 27, after Grimsby Town's match against Manchester United.

Fixtures for the third round will happen during the weeks starting September 15 and 22.

During these weeks, Champions League and Europa League matches are also planned.

The additional conditions mean clubs playing in the Champions League or Europa League cannot face each other in the third round of the League Cup.

This ensures that all clubs can fulfil their fixtures.

The English Football League (EFL) said these changes have been necessary for the second season due to UEFA's scheduling decisions.

The EFL has stated that these conditions will not be needed for the fourth-round ties.

The draw will use two separate bowls: one for the eight Champions League and Europa League clubs and another for the remaining 24 clubs.

A pre-draw will determine if the eight Champions League and Europa League teams will play at home or away.

The first eight ties will be drawn by alternating between one club from each bowl, with the home or away status of the Champions League and Europa League team decided in the pre-draw.

The remaining eight ties will then be drawn from the second bowl only.
