Does Jets top Graded Linebacker Have Chance to Make 53?

Jackson Sirmon

Over the course of the next few hours, we’ll find out just who makes Gang Green’s 53-man roster. One player who isn’t on most NY Jets Roster projections might have a shot to be among those who stay. We’re not here to say we’d bet the farm on Jackson Sirmon making the 53, but if we were, we’d do it on a non-GamStop casinos. If you read the tea leaves, he’s got a better chance than most are giving him.

Second-year linebacker Jackson Sirmon looked awfully good on film in reviewing much of the Jets preseason and he finished as the team’s top graded linebacker per PFF at 70 overall. He was also among the eight players Aaron Glenn and company took an extended look at in rookie camp.

A longshot holdover as an undrafted free agent, Sirmon’s odds improved after the team moved on from veteran Jamin Davis, who could return after final cuts, does it open the door for Sirmon?

Given Glenn’s history of carrying bigger linebackers with plus athleticism, we think it might.

At 240 pounds, Sirmon is the biggest backer on the Jets roster, with size being something Glenn valued at linebacker in Detroit. In fact, the Lions carried several linebackers who checked in at 235 pounds or more last season. With the Jets, he has only Sirmon and special teamer Ja’Markis Weston.

He’s got the size and athleticism coveted by Glenn with the film to suggest he’s ready for an increased role. We’d venture to guess a spot on the practice squad is the worst-case scenario for Sirmon, who averaged just under 9 tackles per game over his final three seasons in college, but making the roster could also be a reality.
