Former Gamecocks quarterback named Saints starter

NEW ORLEANS (WBTV) - Former Gamecocks star Spencer Rattler was named the starting quarterback for the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old beat out rookie second-round pick Tyler Shough for the starting job. He’ll be under center for New Orleans on Sunday, Sept. 7, against the Cardinals.

Rookie season

Rattler was drafted with the 150th pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Saints.

During his rookie season, Rattler played in seven games (started six) and threw for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. He completed 57% of his passes.

College career

In college, Rattler spent three years at Oklahoma (one as a redshirt freshman) before transferring to South Carolina.

During his time at Carolina, he played two seasons, throwing for 6,212 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions. He completed 67.5% of his passes.
