Enzo Maresca has the perfect Chelsea player for Frank Lampard at Coventry City - opinion

When Frank Lampard coached at Derby County earlier in his managerial career, he had a big helping hand when Chelsea loaned him a young Mason Mount. Now he’s in charge at Championship rivals Coventry City, and it’s perhaps slightly surprising that nobody has left Stamford Bridge yet to work under the Blues icon in the West Midlands.

Frank Lampard, 47, continues to work hard to try and make himself a huge success in management.

The Chelsea legend, who is most recognised for his outstanding playing career, has been coaching for several years now. This has included two spells in the dugout at Stamford Bridge, most recently just as a caretaker boss for a short time in 2023.

Frank Lampard’s record in senior manager, including caretaker spell at Chelsea

Lampard has certainly rediscovered his mojo and has looked a natural fit for Coventry since dropping down to the Championship to become their head coach in November 2024. The Sky Blues were unsuccessful in last season’s Championship play-offs, losing in the semi-finals to Sunderland, but have started the new season well with seven points from three games as they hunt promotion.

It’s been reported that Lampard is pushing to sign Ben Chilwell from Chelsea in the closing stages of the summer.

While the 28-year-old left-back would certainly be a statement signing for the Championship club, we think that a Blues youngster would be a much better option for all parties.

It is explained that the 20-year-old Blues midfielder has interest from leagues domestically and in Europe. Ultimately, the club are trying to find him a move where he can play regular first-team football.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is a big fan of Rak-Sakyi, handing him his first-team debut last season and using him four times in the Conference League. However, it may be harder for Enzo Maresca to rotate and use youngsters as frequently this campaign because his team are now in the Champions League.

Rak-Sakyi, who’s a product of the Chelsea academy, has been with the club since the age of eight.

The ball-playing defensive midfielder has come through the youth ranks and looked like a very tidy footballer during his few senior appearances last season. Aged 20, it now feels like the perfect time for him to leave and go out on loan for the first time in his career.

Chelsea should see if Coventry City want Samuel Rak-Sakyi

Coventry were interested in taking Rak-Sakyi on loan back in the January window, so Chelsea should enquire to see if Lampard’s side are still keen.

The Championship outfit have a strong core of midfielders to choose from with the likes of Matt Grimes, Ben Sheaf, Josh Accles and Victor Torp. However, the toughness of a 46-game Championship season, plus domestic cups, definitely requires a strong squad to do well.

Coventry have shaded possession in each of their opening four matches across all competitions (FOTMOB), so sending Rak-Sakyi to a side that is used to plenty of the ball would be a real positive.

On top of that, Lampard has a fantastic track record of working with and improving youngsters as a coach. We’d love to see Chelsea rising star Rak-Sakyi be the latest to follow that path.
