Ruben Amorim could mark the end of two Man United careers with starting XI against Grimsby

Manchester United face Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup second round and there will be plenty of interest in Ruben Amorim’s team selection.

The Red Devils are yet to record a win in the Premier League after a frustrating 1-1 draw against Fulham, meaning Manchester United already find themselves slumped in 16th in the table.

Ruben Amorim’s focus is on the Premier League this season with no European distractions, but a poor start to the campaign has piled pressure on the second round cup tie against Grimsby Town.

United will travel to face the League Two opponents on Wednesday evening and anything but a convincing win would be a huge disappointment.

With one week remaining in the transfer window, United are expected to have a busy deadline week with several sales expected. Amorim’s team selection will send a strong message about those who are set to leave.

Two Man United players may have played their final game

The only major outgoing so far has been Marcus Rashford’s loan move to Barcelona, but others are expected to leave this week.

In particular, Rasmus Hojlund is close to joining Napoli, and the confusion over the goalkeeping department means Andre Onana’s future is cloudy.

Onana has been linked to West Ham after failing to play a single minute of football so far this season.

If Hojlund and Onana are both excluded from the matchday squad against Grimsby, it is a telltale sign that their careers at United are over.

Amorim spoke about Hojlund’s future this week and didn’t rule out a sale – it seems he has fallen behind Benjamin Sesko, Joshua Zirkzee and Chido Obi in the pecking order.

Man United already have replacements for Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana

After a disastrous first season, Amorim was always going to make sweeping changes to his squad, and that includes every position.

The £66 million signing of Sesko is a direct replacement for Hojlund, although the Slovenian is yet to make his first start – it could come against Grimsby.

As for the goalkeeper situation, Amorim has defended Altay Bayindir publicly after his mistake against Arsenal, and he kept his starting spot against Fulham.

But United are in advanced talks for Senne Lammens and the new £17 million signing will likely take over Onana’s No.1 spot at Old Trafford.

At either end of the pitch, Amorim has made big changes.
