Fabio Silva may reportedly be poised to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers for Borussia Dortmund after five years at Molineux.
Silva, then 18, joined the Premier League club from Porto for a club-record fee of about £35m and was considered one of Europe’s top talents.
However, the high-profile transfer created big expectations, which the forward found difficult to meet, netting just four goals in the 2020-21 Premier League season and failing to score in the English top flight since.
Despite several loan spells away from Molineux, Silva has made 72 appearances for the club, netting just five goals and providing six assists.
Even though the 23-year-old has returned to the Premier League side after another spell away from the club, he was uninvolved in the club’s 4-0 defeat by Manchester City and 1-0 reverse against Bournemouth.
As a result, Wolves are planning to sell their former record signing, with the 1996-97 Champions League winners interested in Silva, who has had four loan spells away from Molineux.
BVB reportedly keen on Fabio Silva after mixed loans moves
Las Palmas forward Fabio Silva in November 2024.
Silva has spent most of his time away from Molineux during the last five years, making a total of 101 appearances across spells at Anderlecht, PSV Eindhoven, Rangers and Las Palmas.
The 23-year-old’s latest loan to Las Palmas for the 2024-25 campaign saw the Portuguese score 10 times in 24 appearances, outdoing his numbers in Belgium, the Netherlands and Scotland, where he netted seven goals, four and four again respectively.
Despite flourishing for the Spanish side, Silva is not likely to stay in England as Sky Sports News report that the young forward could depart for Dortmund under the right conditions.
Both clubs are yet to agree on a transfer fee, as the Premier League team reportedly hold out for £26m (€30m), which is higher than the rumoured £21.7m (€25m) fee the Bundesliga side are willing to invest.
How does Fabio Silva potentially fit in at Dortmund?
Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy celebrates on September 27, 2024
Despite the presence of Serhou Guirassy and Maximilian Beier at BVB, there is a rationale behind Dortmund’s reported interest in Silva.
Nico Kovac typically deploys a front two, with Beier or Karim Adeyemi playing in tandem with the Guinea forward.
With Silva unlikely to lead the attack by himself, a potential strike partnership suits him better than playing up top on his own.
Contrarily, though, Guirassy’s seeming permanent placement as a starter for BVB means that three players would essentially be competing for one spot if Silva makes the switch.
That could leave the 23-year-old scrambling for appearances in the side, unless Adeyemi, who has previously been linked with a transfer away, departs the Bundesliga club.
