Former Los Angeles Lakers point guard Rajon Rondo was a wizard on the basketball floor, known for his passing and high-IQ plays. The two-time NBA champion has taken those playmaking instincts to a flag-football field.
According to multiple X accounts, Rondo is officially the top-ranked quarterback across all flag football leagues in the United States.

Rondo’s success as a flag-football QB comes shortly after he served as a consultant on the Milwaukee Bucks, helping his former Boston Celtics head coach, Doc Rivers. The retired guard was also heavily rumored to become an NBA head coach, with the Knicks previously linked to him. Rivers, too, made a case for Rondo to coach in the NBA.
Rondo’s Passion for Multiple Sports
Interestingly, Rondo had previously expressed interest in pursuing another sport after his basketball career. In a 2013 interview, when his days as an All-Star were nearly behind him, Rondo spoke about switching to another sport after his NBA career.
“I’ve always wanted to switch another sport professionally,” he told an NBA.com live chat, via NESN.com.
“I’m not going to do it. It would probably have to be football. I played football. I’m OK. I’m not going to say that what those guys do is easy and it’s an easy transition. I thought about it a couple years ago, but now that’s past my time.”
While football and flag football are vastly different sports, it’s rather commendable that Rondo has found considerable success in the latter, just three years into his retirement.
When Rondo Annoyed Celtics Fans
Rondo last played for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2021-22 season, after the Lakers traded him as part of a three-team deal that also included the New York Knicks.
The iconic point guard had two stints with the Lakers, first between 2018-2019 and 2019-20 seasons, the latter of which ended with an NBA championship, and another short-lived stint in the 2021-22 season that ended with him being traded.
While Rondo enjoyed a fruitful stint with the Lakers, he’s still viewed as a Boston Celtic first and foremost, given his eight-year stint with the franchise. Rondo also played a crucial role in the Celtics capturing the 2008 NBA title. As such, it was rather shocking when he claimed his title with the Lakers in 2020 meant more to him.
“You can’t compare the two honestly because, in 2020, we were in the bubble, so we didn’t get a parade,” Rondo told “The Draymond Green Show” in Nov. 2024.
“So I’ve only had one parade, and that was the most amazing thing that’s happened to me in basketball. That type of love and reaction to see the fans, you’ve seen it this year, but to be a part of it, to get on a duck boat and go on a tour, was amazing.
“That’s the only opportunity I’ve got to have a parade, but at that particular time I won it in 2020, my son was in the bubble with me, and that made that moment a little more special winning it in 2020.”
LeBron James has also advocated for Rajon Rondo to become an NBA head coach.
