ALLEN PARK -- After a busy couple of days and tough conversations, the Detroit Lions have set their initial 53-man roster -- well 50-man roster.
There will surely be even more moving and shaking throughout the rest of the week, as players with less than four seasons of experience will hit waivers and veterans become free agents. The Lions will also start piecing together their 16-person practice squad once players pass through waivers.
One of the big moves was waiving rookie edge defender Ahmed Hassanein with an injury settlement. Hassanein suffered a pectoral injury in the preseason, and the Lions weren’t sure if the sixth-round pick would return this year.
Lions coach Dan Campbell deferred questions about Hassanein to general manager Brad Holmes, who will speak with local reporters later this week. NFL teams only get two injured reserve spots with a designation to return when setting initial rosters,
They also have left three open spots, and with only three edge defenders on the team, expect some movement throughout the week.
“You’re going to take the totality of it. I know for me, that’s big,” Campbell said on Monday. “I want to know start to finish, what did it look like? Was there constant improvement? Do you feel and see development through that time? I think where that would be a little bit -- ‘OK, man, the practices look really good, I see that, but all four of these games have not been good.’ That’s an issue. I think that’s an issue, because all of a sudden, the lights are on and we’re in real games and the coach isn’t behind you and there’s no scripts.”
