INJURED RESERVE/DESIGNATED FOR RETURN
NFL teams used to have to carry players through to their 53-man roster to put them on injured reserve and have them still be eligible to return in the same season. Now teams have up to two designations where they can place a player on IR as part of getting down to 53 players and still be able to activate them after the player misses four games. The Eagles used this maneuver with both Ainias Smith and Albert Okwuegbunam Jr. in 2024.
RESERVE/PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO PERFORM (PUP)
Players who begin the season on reserve/PUP are ineligible to play in the first four games.
