West Ham suffered another damaging result as they were beaten 3-2 by Wolves in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Exit-linked stars Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta found the back of the net as the visitors looked to have booked their place in round three, only for the Hammers to succumb to a brace from Jorgen Strand Larsen in a late Wolves fightback.

The Norwegian frontman came off the bench late on and struck twice in two minutes to heap yet more misery on the visitors.

Graham Potter’s job is under threat at West Ham, and this defeat is another hugely concerning outcome for the boss as he bids to oversee a turnaround to save his job.

Stuart Pearce takes aim at Guido Rodriguez after penalty incident

Guido Rodriguez’s future at West Ham has come under scrutiny on several occasions so far this summer, and it now looks possible that he could depart to complete a switch to La Liga before Monday’s deadline.

The midfielder has struggled to have a consistent impact since his move to E20 last summer, and could be on his way out of the club for as little as £4.3million.

He was dropped for the heavy defeat to Chelsea last Friday night and was recalled to the side against Wolves on Tuesday, but his return to the fold did not result in a positive outcome for his side.

West Ham are already contemplating terminating his contract

The Argentine tripped Jean-Ricner Bellegarde inside the penalty area on the stroke of half-time, and although Hwang Hee-chan hit the post with the resulting spot kick, Rodrigo Gomes converted the rebound to put the hosts ahead.

Rodriguez’s foul capped off a disastrous piece of defending from the Hammers, and former West Ham hero Stuart Pearce was not happy with what he saw.

“100% it was a penalty, Rodriguez had a swing at the ball, and it was a really lazy left foot that brought the Wolves man down,” Pearce said on talkSPORT (26 August, 8:12pm).

“There were four West Ham players in the space of five yards, and they’ve let Wolves get out from the corner flag and from that moment on, Rodriguez was panicking.”

West Ham need to sell Guido Rodriguez

West Ham could potentially terminate Rodriguez’s contract in order to help facilitate a return to his former club Real Betis, and this is an option that should be considered in the next few days.

He has consistently underperformed at the London Stadium since his arrival, and the Irons’ midfield has desperately needed a revamp.

Greater mobility in the middle of the park is a necessity for Potter, and that issue has already been addressed with the departure of Edson Alvarez, and Rodriguez should now be on his way out as well as the Mexican.
