Roster cutdown day is here, with NFL teams needing to get to 53 men before the league’s 4 p.m. deadline.
The Jets got an early start ahead of the deadline, knocking 14 spots off their roster: they waived/released 13 players and agreed to trade Derrick Nnadi back to the Chiefs (pending his physical).
But they still have plenty of work to do today. Here’s where things stand, and you can keep checking back here all day as we track the Jets roster moves.
UPDATE: As of 4:55 p.m. the Jets had cut their roster down to 53 men, but had yet to announce their roster moves, a sign that they not announce anything official until the NFL wire reveals all of the day’s moves (likely sometime after 7 p.m.). Some teams do this because they believe it gives them a competitive advantage, by keeping other teams guessing for longer about potential waiver claims and practice squad targets.
Here’s everything we know as we wait:
Players on roster: 63 (projected)
Roster moves remaining to get to 53: 10 (projected)
Roster moves on Tuesday, Aug. 26:
Waived:
WRQuentin Skinner (per Jordan Schultz): The Jets are hoping to bring back the 6-5 receiver to the practice squad, reportedly. But there’s no guarantee he’ll clear waivers after flashing in the preseason and late in training camp. Here’s more on Skinner’s journey since he joined the Jets roster in April as an undrafted free agent.
WR Malachi Corley (multiple reports): The Jets are moving on from last year’s third-round pick, which is not even remotely surprising given how little of an impact he had during OTAs and training camp under the new regime. Corley struggled to even get second-team reps throughout camp and made just one catch for eight yards on four targets in three preseason games. In hindsight, last year’s much ballyhooed trade-up for Corley feels like a sad, failed Hail Mary that sums up the Aaron Rodgers era.
OTCarter Warren: The Paterson native played high school football at Passaic Tech and was a fourth-round pick in 2023 out of Pittsburgh. He started six games for the Jets in his first two seasons, but couldn’t win the swing tackle job after the Jets drafted tackles in the top half of the first round in 2024 and 2025. He’s a practice squad candidate.
DLEric Watts: He earned a roster spot in 2024 as an undrafted rookie, but a quiet offseason program and training camp didn’t help his cause in 2025. Another practice squad candidate.
DB Jarrick Bernard Converse (per NFL Network): The 2023 sixth-round pick was facing an uphill battle under a new regime. He had a strong training camp so could be a practice squad candidate.

Here is everything else you need to know heading into roster cutdown day.
3 things to watch for
Roster shuffle
The Jets have to waive any player with less than four years of experience if they want to remove them from the roster. But they can also release any player with more than four years roster experience without that player being subject to waiver claim.
So one possible example: fullback Andrew Beck. If the Jets release him, but inform Beck they intend to re-sign him in the coming days, they could do that to clear a roster spot while other moves are pending.
Waiver wire
The Jets could use the waiver wire to bolster their roster in the coming days.
The Jets are No. 7 in the waiver claim order, behind the Titans, Browns, Giants, Patriots, Jaguars and Raiders. They can put in a claim for any player who is waived around the league and will be awarded them on Wednesday, provided a team ahead of them on the list doesn’t also claim that player.
Any player the Jets are awarded via waiver claim must go directly onto the 53-man roster, so they’ll have to clear another spot.
Positions to watch
We’ve already seen the Jets bolster the defensive tackle position via trade. So the most likely positions for them to improve via waiver claim are wide receiver, where they have good depth but little top-end talent, and tight end, where only rookie Mason Taylor’s roster spot is fully secure.
Here are the moves the Jets have made so far.
Roster moves on Monday, Aug. 25
Traded: DT Derrick Nnadi to Chiefs for a conditional swap (sending a 2027 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick)
Roster moves on Sunday, Aug. 24

Roster moves on Saturday, Aug. 23
