Leeds United player ratings vs Sheffield Wednesday as Lukas Nmecha best of a bad bunch

A very disappointing [Leeds United lost on penalties to Sheffield Wednesday](https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/sport/leeds-united/sheffield-wednesday-vs-leeds-live-32347303) in the second round of the League Cup after an abject showing.

A poor first half that lacked attacking thrust will some travelling fans booing at the end of the first half. [Leeds](https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/sport/leeds-united/sheffield-wednesday-vs-leeds-live-32347303) continued in the same vein after half-time, and Sheffield Wednesday made them pay.

Karl Darlow palmed a long shot wide but then saw Jamal Lowe's tight-angle shot squeeze between his legs, and it went down as an own goal. Jayden Bogle came off the bench to be the rescuer for Leeds, his tight-angle finish after good feet making it 1-1 on 81 minutes.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin came on for his debut and ought to have netted the winner but somehow put the ball wide from a brilliant cross in stoppage time.

The game went straight to penalties and Leeds failed to score in the shoot-out, losing 3-0.

**KARL DARLOW**

Palmed the initial shot well wide but then let Lowe's effort squeeze between his legs and over the line. Cannot excuse that as a goalkeeper, despite his other work. **4**

**SAM BYRAM**

The skipper for the night played very high and sometimes lost out on duels, losing the ball more than he ought to. Not his style of play and was hooked with 20 minutes to go. **5**

**JAKA BIJOL**

Rusty and sometimes had to make a late tackle more than once, sometimes fouling. Passing was OK but pace is clearly his weakness. **6**

**SEBASTIAAN BORNAUW**

Looked leggy and nervous in the first half. Steadied somewhat after having less to do in the second half. Hardly convincing. **5**

**JACK HARRISON**

Playing at left-back, Harrison operated as a second left winger. Got caught out as a result at one stage on the break. His crosses left much to be desired, despite his good work ethic and stamina. **6**

**ILIA GRUEV**

Covered ground, although did not offer much intuition when looking forward. Hit a very poor free-kick shortly after half-time. **5**

**SEAN LONGSTAFF**

Saw a lot of the ball, but often from deep. Gave a few loose passes and seemed to avoid the riskier option which, in this game, was the wrong tack. **4**

**BRENDEN AARONSON**

Made some poor choices early on, both in decisions to pass or shoot. Had the best chances but squandered them. First-half set-piece hit the first non-wall man and sparked a breakaway. Did better when beating a man and firing low from a corner after half-time but not enough. **5**

**JOEL PIROE**

Showed good feet and held off markers well when surrounded, yet was out of the game for too long as a number 10. Acted as a second striker when behind but with little product. **4**

**NOAH OKAFOR**

Found joy on the left and put in some dangerous balls. Was threatening and lively throughout. He could have taken his second-half shot closer to goal but hit it early and saw it saved. **7**

**LUKAS NMECHA**

Brought ball down well and used his muscle. Good link up play, won free-kicks and wasn't afraid to shoot when given space. Has put himself in contention to start against Newcastle. **8**

### SUBS

**JAYDEN BOGLE (on 71' for Byram)**

Looked instantly more dangerous and direct than Byram. Showed great feet and perseverance for his goal. **7**

**DANIEL JAMES (on 83' for Okafor)**

Caused defenders to back-track and foul. Came on too late for a proper rating. **N/A.**

**DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN (on 58' for Nmecha)**

Didn't get much service. Glanced a header wide that seemed to come off his shoulder and missed a sitter. Had tow other good chances after too. Woeful spot kick in the shoot-out. **4**

**ANTON STACH (on 71' for Gruev)**

Steadied the ship and was more progressive. Gave much needed solidity. **6**

**WILFRIED GNONTO (on 58' for Aaronson)**

Injected a bit of life on the right, making a quick impact. But then went quiet. **6**
