Matty Hewitt with the Sunderland player ratings from the Black Cats Carabao Cup Second Round clash
Dan Neil in action for Sunderland against Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup.
It was an evening to forget for Sunderland as they crashed out of the Carabao Cup Second Round against League One side Huddersfield Town 6-5 on penalties.
Regis Le Bris made 11 changes from the side that lost against Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday, while the Terriers made ten of their own.
Leo Castledine opened the scoring for the visitors with a brilliant volley after just nine minutes and it took Sunderland until the 84th minute to respond, with Marc Guiu equalising.
Here Chronicle Live runs the rule over the players from the second round clash at the Stadium of Light.
Anthony Patterson - 6
Had a quiet game and there was nothing he could do with Huddersfield's opener.
Niall Huggins - 5
Didn't really get the full-back into the game. Replaced by Jenson Jones at half-time.
Nordi Mukiele - 5
Looked the more comfortable of the two Sunderland debutants in defence but still pretty rusty. Improved as the game went on and should have scored with his header just after the hour mark. Replaced late on.
Arthur Masuaku - 5
Didn't look overly comfortable in the heart of defence and ended up in the same place as Harrison Jones who was operating at left-back for large parts of the first half. Looked better in the second half. Shown a yellow card for dissent.
Harrison Jones - 5
More minutes for the Academy of Light graduate and was steady away, despite it not being his natural position. Defended well and bombed forward but end product was poor.
Dan Neil - 7
Sunderland's best player albeit on a disappointing night. Produced a big block before half-time to deny Town a goal scoring opportunity. Worked his socks off.
Enzo Le Fee - 6
Looked to try and get Sunderland ticking but was lacking that touch of quality we've become accustomed to seeing.
Chris Rigg - 5
The youngster was his tenacious self out of possession and showed flashes. End product was disappointing.
Patrick Roberts - 5
Struggled to get going out on the left with Lynden Gooch winning that battle. Looked more at ease on the right, and created a good chance for Rigg, which came to nothing.
Wilson Isidor - 6
Wasn't in the game first-half whatsoever. Looked better out on the left and caused Gooch more problems than his former teammate Roberts but end product wasn't there. Substituted.
Marc Guiu - 6
Hardly touched the ball in the opening 45 minutes and had to feed off scraps in the second. A good striker needs just one opportunity and he took it with the clock ticking.
Substitutes
Jenson Jones (Niall Huggins 45) - 6
Made his first appearance for Sunderland at the half-time interval and instantly slot into the side, offering an outlet from right-back. Had a half chance on the 50th minute mark at the far post but the ball had too much on it.
Jenson Seelt - 6
Came on for Nordi Mukiele late on and didn't put a foot wrong. Had almost nothing to do.
Milan Aleksic - 6
Produced a brilliant ball into the box for Sunderland's equaliser after good play down the left.
