Liverpool could make British record offer for forward

Liverpool came from behind to defeat Newcastle United 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at St. James’ Park on Monday night.

The Reds had gone 2-0 up courtesy of goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike but Newcastle – who had been reduced to ten men when Anthony Gordon was sent off – halved the deficit through Bruno Guimaraes.

Substitute William Osula then looked to have rescued a point for Eddie Howe’s side, before 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha slotted past Nick Pope to score his first senior goal and secure all three points for Liverpool.

Arne Slot will be pleased with the result on Tyneside, although he will likely be slightly concerned at the fact that his side have thrown away two-goal leads in each of their two Premier League games so far this term.

In the build up to the match, much of the talk was around Newcastle feared Alexander Isak, who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool.

Now, it has emerged that the reigning Premier League champions could be willing to pay a huge amount to sign the player.

According to TBR Football, the Merseyside giants are preparing an offer in excess of £130 million for the Sweden international.

It is claimed that the bid could end up being closer to £140 million if certain add-ons are triggered, however the Reds will not pay the £150 million price tag that Newcastle are said to have put on the player.

If Liverpool were to sign Isak for a fee in excess of £130 million, it would make him the most expensive signing by a British club in history.

Isak hasn’t been involved in either of Newcastle’s games so far this term and the striker has taken to social media to vent his frustration at his current situation.

While Isak has been training away from his teammates, the report claims that members of the Newcastle hierarchy have spoken to the player and offered him a route back into Howe’s squad, should he stay put in the North East.

Isak, 25, has scored 62 goals in 109 games for the Magpies since joining from Spanish side Real Sociedad back in 2022.

The report also claims that Newcastle are on the hunt for two new strikers before the transfer window closes, with Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Wolves star Jorgen Strand Larsen touted as targets, although the latter is valued by his current club at a staggering £70 million.
