For now, Maurice Alexander’s reunion with Ben Johnson in the Windy City hasn’t gone as planned.
The 28-year-old wide receiver was waived Tuesday as part of the Chicago Bears’ roster cuts, with all NFL teams required to finalize their 53-man rosters by the 4 p.m. deadline.
After spending the past three seasons with the Detroit Lions — primarily on the practice squad — Alexander signed with the Bears on Jan. 31, just 10 days after Johnson left Detroit to become Chicago’s head coach.
Alexander appeared in two of the Bears’ three preseason games, recording nine catches for 71 yards and a touchdown in their 24-24 tie with the Miami Dolphins.
During his time in Detroit, Alexander saw seven offensive snaps and 44 on special teams, with most of his action coming in 2022. That season, he returned six kickoffs for 146 yards.
Alexander signed with the Lions after one lone season with the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars. A standout from Florida International, the speedy receiver was not selected during the 2020 NFL draft.
