Daniel Farke makes surprising Dominic Calvert-Lewin statement after Leeds United embarrassment

Tuesday night was not a great one for Leeds United. The Whites were knocked out on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. Daniel Farke’s men failed to bounce back from the loss to Arsenal.

The Leeds players will be very disappointed in themselves with how they played in the game. They could have won with the amount of chances they created throughout the 90 minutes, but there was very poor finishing on display.

Daniel Farke handed a runout to most of the club’s new signings. Jaka Bijol, Noah Okafor, Sebastiaan Bornauw, Sean Longstaff and Lukas Nmecha were all handed their first starts in a Leeds United jersey.

The Whites eventually lost on penalties, as all of their players failed to score during the shootout. The game could have gone a much different way if Leeds took their chances late in the game. Dominic Calvert-Lewin was guilty of missing a few.

After the game, Daniel Farke had this to say about the striker’s performance.

“He actually had 3 chances when he came on, you know, during the game I am happy he was getting those chances.

“It is his first minutes of the season and it was good to see him get in the right positions. We know Dominic will get sharper and will take these chances in the future.

“He is a fantastic striker and he is what we need up front, it is not always easy to come on the pitch and have chances come at you so quick but he has the ability to get in the right places.

“It is also tough when you are so quickly into things and anything can happen with penalties. He has a great record taking penalties and this was an unfortunate moment for him.”

Leeds might need to sign a new striker this week

Tuesday night makes it three games into this new season, and Leeds have scored two goals – one coming from the penalty spot. But the Whites have missed some guilt-edged chances in all three games.

Daniel Farke may look to the transfer market and bring in a more clinical attacker, because the initial performances of some of these players is not a good sign.
