Former Texas A&M wide receiver/punt returner Ainias Smith is being released by the Philadelphia Eagles, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The Eagles selected Smith in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
When the Eagles acquired former Texans wide receiver John Metchie III on Aug. 17, that signaled the possibility that Smith’s status could be up in the air. During the preseason, Smith tallied 6 receptions for 40 yards with 2 touchdowns, along with a 46-yard punt return.
Smith appeared in 7 games during his rookie season, amassing 7 receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown which came in the regular season finale against the New York Giants.
The 5-foot-9 Smith played 5 seasons at Texas A&M at a variety of positions. During his college career, Smith totaled 180 receptions for 2,407 yards and 19 touchdowns, with his longest reception being 72 yards. Smith also rushed for 405 yards and 4 scores. As a punt returner, Smith had 836 yards and 2 touchdowns. As a kickoff returner, Smith went for 360 yards on 20 attempts.
During his final college season, Smith was selected as a First-team All-SEC member. The Texas native committed to Texas A&M over his other finalist Duke.
