Former Lions defensive tackle cut by 49ers ahead of 53-man deadline

An NFL journeyman who spent two seasons with the Detroit Lions was among the San Francisco 49ers’ roster cuts heading into the 2025 season.

Bruce Hector, who signed with the 49ers earlier this August, is back on the free-agent market after the team announced his release. All NFL teams had to finalize their 53-man rosters by Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline.

Hector, 30, has bounced around the NFL since entering the league as an undrafted free agent after no team selected him in the 2018 NFL Draft. His NFL journey began that year when he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he had two separate stints. Hector also suited up for the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, New York Jets (three stints), Houston Texans (two stints) and the United Football League’s Arlington Renegades.

The Lions claimed Hector off waivers ahead of their 2021 training camp following his exit from Tennessee. While he didn’t make Detroit’s 53-man roster that year, the team re-signed him to its practice squad the next day after roster cuts. After the 2021 season, Hector signed a reserve/futures contract to remain in Detroit.

Right before the 2022 season, Hector found himself in the same position again with the Lions, failing to make their roster following training camp. He once again signed to Detroit’s practice squad after clearing waivers, only to be released that October.

In three games with the Lions, Hector recorded three tackles.
