The Cleveland Browns quarterback saga hits a new phase before the start of the season.
With Kenny Pickett gone to Las Vegas and Tyler 'Snoop' Huntley officially cut, Joe Flacco starts ahead of Dillon Gabriel who was named the backup. The move leaves Shedeur Sanders as the designated third string "emergency" QB, according to Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski.
Despite the massive popularity, the fifth-round rookie will be on the sidelines unless some unfortunate injuries occur ahead of him. Not unlikely considering the Browns QB history. Flacco will be the starting QB for Week 1 against the AFC North rival Cincinnati Bengals, and likely for the foreseeable future.
The backup battle between Gabriel and Sanders has been one of the more talked-about preseason storylines, leaving many wondering how the Browns depth chart would be settled.
Gabriel has thrown for 272 yards and one touchdown in two games of work. His two turnovers against the Philadelphia Eagles, including a pick-six, called his shaky play into question. But Sanders' terrible finale against the Los Angeles Rams secured Gabriel's backup role. However, the Colorado Buffaloes legend had two touchdowns in his debut against the Carolina Panthers to the preseason slate.
Despite being behind the 40-year-old Flacco, the battle between Gabriel and Sanders is far from over. Buckle up because this will be fun to watch in Cleveland.
