The Miami Dolphins cut 2022 fourth-round wide receiver Erik Ezukanma on roster cut day, according to The Palm Beach Post. Ezukanma was considered a project and never caught on with the Dolphins, playing in just five games across three seasons with the team.
Ezukanma spent his entire stint with the Dolphins battling up a depth chart headlined by Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. With little room to grow and much of the target share already spoken for, the Dolphins have decided that it was time for them to cut their losses on the former Texas Tech Red Raider.
Ezukanma only accumulated 22 yards on five catches during his time in Miami and could be an interesting practice squad candidate for a team that has already endured injuries at the position.
His 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame could result in a team sending a flyer on him to see if the Dolphins' speed-focused system was the wrong environment for him to excel. Ezukanma racked up back-to-back 700-yard seasons in his final two collegiate seasons, but was stuffed down the depth chart when the Dolphins selected him in 2022.
Ezukanma had a disappointing preseason with just six catches for 45 yards during the exhibition games. It's not a standout performance to jump him to the top of lists to land on an active roster right away, but his past has shown flashes of his ability, and could land him on a practice squad ahead of the NFL season kicking off.
The Dolphins kick their season off on the road against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 7.
