Bills Release Undrafted Second-Year Running Back Despite Strong Preseason: Report

The Buffalo Bills informed running back Frank Gore Jr. he would be released while working through roster cuts on Tuesday, according to a report.

"RB Frank Gore Jr. was released by the Bills," ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg wrote on X.

It was always going to be an uphill battle for Gore Jr. to make the roster. Three spots in the running back room were a lock for James Cook, Ty Johnson and Ray Davis to share the backfield with Josh Allen.

However, the son of former San Francisco 49ers star Frank Gore went out with a bang.

Gore Jr. finished the preseason with 104 rushing yards and 109 receiving yards. According to NBC Sports, he was the only player in the league who surpassed 100 yards in both categories throughout the league's exhibition games.

Coming off of an impressive stint in the preseason, several teams that are looking to add running back depth will likely look to at least add him to their practice squad. Some teams may even consider signing him to their active roster.

"This is where trust in general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott has to come in," wrote Sara Larson for Buffalo Rumblings. "They know the market, they know their roster, and they've built a reputation for threading the needle on tough cutdown decisions. Still, Gore's performance has been strong enough to make even the most level-headed fans a little uneasy."

Gore Jr. surely knew it will be an uphill battle after only being active for one game last season and not playing, especially with being signed as an undrafted free agent a year ago.
