Pittsburgh Steelers unexpectedly part ways with two veteran defensive backs

The Pittsburgh Steelers surprisingly cut safety Chuck Clark and cornerback James Pierre on Tuesday. As it stands, the Steelers have just eight defensive backs on the roster, meaning that both players could circle back.

Clark and Pierre are vested veterans who do not have to clear waivers, making it much easier to bring those players back on the roster. They could be signed back as soon as Thursday.

Clark is coming off two back-to-back seasons with serious injuries. He missed all of 2023 with a torn ACL, and returned for the 2024 season, but it was ended early by a torn pectoral muscle.

Clark started 12 games for the Jets with 69 tackles, one tackle for loss, and two pass deflections. His most productive years came with the Ravens, where he was a starter from 2019 to 2022.

Pierre was with the Steelers for his sixth season with the team. In 2024, Pierre played in 15 games after being signed early in the season to bring special teams experience to the team.

All in all, he had one interception, two forced fumbles, and 23 tackles. He was in the top ten in the NFL in special teams tackles. This signing gives the Steelers, along withBen Skowronek, both of their starting gunners back on the team.
