Former Lions DT released after brief stint with Patriots

A former Detroit Lions defensive tackle saw his reunion with a familiar coach cut short after less than a month.

Thirty-two-year-old veteran Kyle Peko was among the New England Patriots’ roster cuts ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline, when all NFL teams had to finalize their 53-man rosters for the 2025 season.

Peko joined New England after spending the previous year in Detroit. He first signed with the Lions in May 2024 but was released following training camp.

The Lions quickly brought him back on their practice squad, and several weeks later promoted him to the active roster. He appeared in five games, including one start, and finished with two tackles and two quarterback hits.

His time in Detroit ended in Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys, when he suffered a torn pectoral muscle that required season-ending surgery.

This summer, Peko landed in New England and reunited with Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, who had coached him in Tennessee during the 2021 and 2023 seasons.

Over his career, Peko has also had stints with the Las Vegas Raiders, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos. He broke into the league with Denver in 2016 as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon State, spending his first three seasons there.

Across seven NFL seasons, Peko has recorded 58 tackles, seven quarterback hits, two sacks and one forced fumble.
