Michigan’s starting center on its 2023 national championship team was cut by the 49ers Tuesday ahead of the 4 p.m. deadline to finalize 53-man rosters.
Drake Nugent, who went undrafted in 2024, was waived by San Francisco but can join the team’s practice squad if he goes unclaimed. The 24-year-old also was waived by the 49ers after the 2024 preseason but spent most of the year on their practice squad. He twice was elevated to the active roster but never appeared in a game.
After the season, San Francisco signed him to a futures contract.
Nugent spent his first four NCAA seasons at Stanford before transferring to Michigan for his final year of eligibility. He started all 15 games, was a Rimington Trophy finalist and earned first-team all-conference honors.
